Who is Echo Marvel? Who Are the Creatives Behind ‘Echo’?

Who is Echo Marvel? Who Are the Creatives Behind ‘Echo’? Echo (Maya Lopez) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The adoptive daughter of the Kingpin, the character has been depicted as a supporting character of Daredevil. A Native American (of the Cheyenne Nation) and one of the few deaf comic characters, her “Echo” guise includes a white handprint that covers most of her face.

Alaqua Cox portrays Maya Lopez in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in the television series Hawkeye (2021), and will be starring in her own upcoming spin-off series Echo (2024).

Who is Echo Marvel?

A fictitious superheroine that appears in American comic books published by Marvel Comics is called Echo, also referred to as Maya Lopez. She is a deaf Native American (of the Cheyenne Nation) with photographic reflexes, the capacity to precisely mimic the movements of another person. As a proficient martial artist and assassin, she has made effective use of her abilities, but she has also utilized them as a hero and Avengers member.

Writer David Mack and artist Joe Quesada developed Echo, who made his comic book debut in Daredevil #9 (December 1999). She joined the Avengers as a hero after being presented as a villain in the beginning.

Echo is a fascinating and nuanced character. She has endured tragedy, but she has also triumphed over hardship to become a formidable hero. She serves as an inspiration for Native Americans and the deaf.

Alaqua Cox will play Echo in the upcoming Disney+ series of the same name, where she will make her live-action debut. The show will go into Echo’s past as well as her heroic quest.

Is There a Trailer for ‘Echo’?

Marvel Studios unveiled an Echo trailer at the D23 Expo last September 2022, but it has yet to release it to the public. The exclusive footage showcases Echo’s tremendous fighting skills, a cast of Native Americans, and the return of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), who is wearing an eyepatch.

Viewers of the Hawkeye series would recall Maya shooting Kingpin offscreen during the final episode after learning that Kingpin had tricked Hawkeye into killing her father. The first official image released by Marvel shows Echo (Alaqua Cox) looking beaten but determined in the back of a forklift as if she’s just survived a battle and contemplating the next one. The photo reveals Cox’s prosthetic right leg, making her even more badass than her bodily armored, heavily weaponized fellow superheroes.

What Is ‘Echo’ About?

Marvel’s official synopsis reads:

Streaming exclusively on Disney, the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.

When And Where Will ‘Echo’ Be Released?

Echo was originally set to premiere on Disney+ on November 29, 2023. However, the series has been delayed to January 2024, likely as a result of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and a pullback from Disney+. Disney has also revealed that all six episodes will hit the streamer simultaneously. Echo will be the first Disney+ series to embrace the binge model pioneered by Netflix. The move follows the announcement of Loki Season 2 keeping its week-to-week schedule.

Who Are the Cast of ‘Echo’?

Alaqua Cox, who grew up on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin, plays Maya Lopez/Echo in the Hawkeye spin-off series. As a deaf Native American and leg amputee who has never acted before (except for a stint in a high school play), her breakthrough casting and unforgettable performance in Hawkeye were widely applauded, igniting enthusiasm for her trailblazing lead role in the Echo series. Charlie Cox returns as the blind lawyer/superhero Matt Murdock/Daredevil, who debuted in Netflix’s hugely popular three-season series and was last seen in cameos in MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Daredevil and Echo have a romantic relationship in Marvel Comics.

Vincent D’Onofrio reprises his role as crime lord Wilson Fisk/Kingpin — the surrogate uncle of Maya whom she shoots in the final moments of Hawkeye after she discovers that he caused her father’s death. There’s plenty of bad blood between Kingpin and his former protégé, a grudge match that will follow Maya from New York to her indigenous roots in Oklahoma.

Zahn McClarnon (Reservation Dogs) also reprises his role from Hawkeye as William Lopez, the dearly beloved father of Maya, who is also a Kingpin associate and former leader of the Tracksuit Mafia. When a young Maya witnesses Lopez’s death at the hands of Ronin (Hawkeye’s past alter-ego), she becomes obsessed with revenge, only to find out that her “uncle” Fisk ordered the kill.

Reservation Dogs star and writer Devery Jacobs plays Julie, a member of Maya’s indigenous family and community. Jacobs is memorable as Elora Danan Postoak in the critically acclaimed Reservation Dogs, which was created by Sterlin Harjo and MCU veteran Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love & Thunder).

Rounding out the cast are Chaske Spencer (Wild Indian, The English), who played Jace Montero in Netflix’s Jessica Jones; Tantoo Cardinal (Killers of the Flower Moon, Stumptown), a Canadian actor of Cree and Métis heritage; Cody Lightning (Smoke Signals) also of Cree heritage; Graham Greene, the Academy Award-nominated indigenous Canadian actor known for his roles in Dances With Wolves and The Green Mile.

Marvel Studios’ Echo spins out of Hawkeye

Alaqua Cox made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Maya Lopez/Echo in the 2021 Disney+ series Hawkeye. That series ultimately revealed Maya’s mysterious “uncle” to be none other than Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. Vincent D’Onofrio reprised his role as Fisk from the MCU-adjacent Netflix original series Marvel’s Daredevil. While Maya seemingly killed Fisk in Hawkeye’s finale, D’Onofrio will once again return to star opposite Alaqua Cox in Maya’s solo series.

Additionally, Charlie Cox (no relation to Alaqua) is attached to reprise his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in Disney+’s Echo. Charlie Cox first played Matt Murdock in Netflix’s aforementioned Daredevil series. He subsequently reprised the role in the 2021 MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home. The actor’s most recent turn as the Man Without Fear came in the 2022 Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Notably, Echo is expected to set the stage for the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, which once again stars Charlie Cox opposite D’Onofrio. (This connection is fitting, seeing as how the character of Echo actually originates from the Daredevil comic books.) Born Again was announced as a spring 2024 release, though this is likely to change.

In the meantime, Alaqua Cox, D’Onofrio, and Charlie Cox won’t be alone in Marvel Studios’ Echo this January. The Hawkeye spin-off also stars Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Graham Greene, Cody Lightning, Devery Jacobs, and Zahn McClarnon.

Marvel Studios’ Echo premieres on Disney+ in January 2024.
