Is Mila In The Multiverse Marvel? What this The Multiverse?

Is Mila In The Multiverse Marvel? Mila travels to another universe—one where she attends an alchemical institute. Once she swaps bodies with another version of herself there, her mom (who came to the same place) is able to communicate with her through their POLLENs.

Unfortunately, Mila’s POLLEN is immediately confiscated by an instructor. (I guess those no-phones-in-school policies apply even to technologically advanced universes.)

But Mila has a plan: convince her friends in this universe to trust her, get the POLLEN back, find her mom and hopefully avoid the Operators along the way.

Is Mila In The Multiverse Marvel?

Mila in the Multiverse is a Brazilian show available on Disney+. But don’t be fooled by the title, the Multiverse Mila is exploring isn’t the same one Doctor Strange and his companions have been traversing.

Yes, many of the show’s elements are similar to Marvel—science-y superpowers, the theory of infinite universes, bad guys determined to use those powers to destroy those universes—but the show has nothing to do with the MCU.

There’s some light language scattered throughout each episode. And an LGBT storyline works its way in by the second episode. Kids can sometimes be rude to adults, but they’re often called out for their bad attitudes.

So if you don’t want to navigate those elements but also don’t want to miss out on anything from the latest phase of Marvel, fret not. Because you’re not missing out on anything by skipping Mila in the Multiverse.

Is Mila in the Multiverse part of the MCU?

Nowadays, all anyone can think about when they see or hear the word “multiverse” is Marvel. The connection is instantaneous and, in all honesty, understandable. The MCU is one of the biggest movie franchises in the world, and its Multiverse Saga has left no one indifferent. When you add TV shows to that mix, it stands to reason that some would conclude that Mila in the Multiverse is one of the MCU’s latest installments.

Despite being owned by Disney, much like Marvel is, Mila in the Multiverse is in no way related to the superhero franchise. In fact, the show is a Disney Plus original, unlike MCU’s movies and TV series, which are based on the Marvel comic books.

All eight episodes of Mila in the Multiverse‘s first season are available for streaming on Disney Plus.

‘Mila In The Multiverse’ On Disney+, Where A Teen Travels Through Parallel Universes To Find Her Mom

Ten years later, Mila (Laura Luz) is celebrating her 16th birthday, but she’s frustrated because her mother, Elis (Malu Mader) is spending all of her time in her basement lab. But Elis is working on a breakthrough: A copy of that interdimensional transport device that Mila found in her bag a decade earlier. She tests it and ends up swapping bodies with a version of Elis that seems to cherish every morsel of the PB&J that’s on the plate in front of her, then they swap again. The idea is that she’s going to give the new device to Mila.

Mila’s had it with her mom, though, and plans to go to spend the weekend with her bestie Juliana (Yuki Sugimoto) at her family’s beach house. One of the things that Ju marvels at is how it seems that Mila knows everyone in school and has nice things to say about them, even Vinicius (João Victor), the kid in the overalls who carries a Frozen lunchbox, or Pierre (Dani Flomin) who bumps her and makes her spill her tea, even though he said the last time it was acid.

Elis promises to pick her up at school and give her a surprise — the transporter — but is waylaid when the masked soldiers, The Operators, come looking for her. When Mila manages to get home, she’s of course incensed at her mother, but Elis doesn’t have a chance to make it right; when the Operators come after her as she’s holed up in her lab, she swaps bodies again with the Elis that is happy for the food and hot water.

Mila wonders about this strange turn her mother has taken, so she goes down to the lab and manages to find the new device. She pushes a button and suddenly she’s in a different version of her school. Suddenly, Ju doesn’t want to know her. Everything looks weird. But Elis is out there somewhere in the multiverse; Mila just needs to figure out where.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? There are a bunch of teen-led sci fi series, but in a lot of ways, Mila In The Multiverse reminds us of Chosen, the Danish series on Netflix.

Our Take: Mila In The Multiverse just feels like a fun show in a lot of ways. It has a bit of a low-budget feel that makes it almost reminiscent of truly low-budget sci fi shows of the past (we’re thinking of the original Land Of The Lost, but Mila looks a lot better than that show). The story is a bit confusing at the outset, but just the idea of seeing Mila traversing these seemingly-infinite universes makes us look forward to seeing more.

One of the details that creators Cássio Koshikumo and Janaína Tokitaka have given Mila is the fact that she’s popular in her school, but popular in the sense that she’s just well-liked by everyone and she has good things to say about everyone in her class. It will serve her well as she travels to different versions of São Paulo, where she can recognize the good aspects of the different versions of the people she knows in her universe.

We do need to see a bit clearer of an explanation of who The Operators are and why they’re after this version of Elis. It could be that they just don’t want anyone to know about the existence of the multiverse, and somehow Elis figured it out. But that’s a piece of plot that we don’t mind getting in smaller chunks, because we’re more interested in seeing Mila — and maybe her friends — jumping back and forth into different universes.
