What is Domino Marvel? How Does She Get Her Powers?

What is Domino Marvel? How Does She Get Her Powers? Domino (Neena Thurman) is a character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character is best known as a member of the mutant team X-Force. Created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist/co-writer Rob Liefeld, Domino made her first full cover story appearance in X-Force #8 (March 1992) as an original member of the Wild Pack team led by the mutant Cable.

In addition to her exceptional marksmanship and hand-to-hand skills, Domino possesses mutant probability-altering powers. She often uses her skills as a mercenary, but has also been the partner, confidante, and love interest of the superhero Cable, a lieutenant in his militant group X-Force, and a member of the X-Men.

In other media outside comics, Domino has primarily appeared in video games, though she has made minor animated television appearances and a live-action film appearance in Deadpool 2 (2018), portrayed by Zazie Beetz.

What is Domino Marvel?

Domino is one of Marvel’s luckiest heroes, but even the Deadpool antihero has one of the most surprising weaknesses in Marvel Comics: She’s deathly afraid of chickens. In a 2009 comic book, Domino reveals her unexpected fear of the domesticated bird. Her unguessable weakness is so unlikely that it needs to appear in the MCU as viewers, as it’s so out of the left-field it would work well alongside the funnier tone of future Deadpool films.

Domino gained her powers of altering probability after being experimented on in a top-secret government program that tried to create the perfect weapon. The program wasn’t considered a success, and after getting broken free from the facility, she began her life as a mercenary, which would put her on a direct path with Deadpool.

Her luck powers have come in handy many times, including in her live-action appearance in Deadpool 2, where she was the only new X-Force member to survive their hilariously short debut mission. However, despite her luck powers, Domino does have a considerable weakness Deadpool exploits: chickens.

In Deadpool #17 by Daniel Way, Paco Medina, Juan Vlasco, Marte Gracia, and VC’s Joe Sabino, the Merc with a Mouth is granted membership in the X-Men, but he immediately proves to take his new role too seriously. After Deadpool makes it clear he wants to kill one of the group’s public enemies, the X-Men task Domino with stopping him.

When Domino finally catches up with Wade Wilson and ties him to a bed, she later helps him escape. Deadpool demands to know her biggest fear, and she responds with “chickens” but refuses to tell him why. After joining Wolverine in finding Deadpool (as he threatens to kill him), Domino is immediately confronted by her biggest fear.

Domino is paralyzed in fear by the chicken, as she only gets past after Wolverine physically destroys the vent they encountered it in. It’s a poor move on Deadpool’s part to immediately exploit Domino’s weakness after she opened up to him – but the Merc with the Mouth has never been known for his trustworthiness or manners.

Funny enough, Domino isn’t the only one with a fear of a particular animal, as Deadpool tells her he’s scared of cows while gaining the information from her. A scene in the upcoming Deadpool 3 in the MCU where Domino and the titular hero visit a farm and learn each other’s animal fears would be pretty hilarious. Deadpool would surely use the knowledge to his advantage and get a rare one-up on Domino.

Not to take away from Domino’s fear, as being deathly afraid of certain animals, in this case, a chicken, is a real-life problem many people deal with. However, the weakness is surprising considering the luck-altering antihero’s no-fear attitude. Hopefully, the MCU adapts her greatest fear in Deadpool 3, as fans deserve to see Domino’s unlikely weakness on the big screen – as she surely wouldn’t be happy to see Deadpool learn and exploit it, leading to some excellent potential revenge.

How Does She Get Her Powers?

Domino, real name is Neena Thurman, made her debut in 1992 as part of Marvel’s X-Force: a team of superheroes who fight to eliminate threats to the mutant race. Her backstory, however, is even more intriguing. According to her official Marvel bio, “Neena was one of many children born to the US government’s Project: Armageddon, designed to genetically engineer the perfect weapon using a precognitive mutant named Beatrice.” Although the experiment worked on her, it resulted in casualties for the other children involved. Domino was only one of two survivors and found safety in the care of a Chicago priest after being rescued by Beatrice’s cult, known as the Armajesuits.

What Abilities Does She Have?

The aftermath of the genetic experiment gave Domino a unique telekinetic ability, which allows her to generate fields of “good luck.” With this power, she is able to control probability in her favor. This means she can make things “occur within her line of sight, thus causing her to have “good luck” and her opponents to have “bad luck” during battle. How freakin’ cool is that? The only downside is Domino hasn’t figured out a way to consciously control her abilities. The subconscious superpower is constantly emanating from her body, but she can only activate it by putting herself in stressful situations where she can be harmed. Bummer.

Another fun/scary fact: the full extent of Domino’s powers is still unknown.

What Else Can She Do?

Just like her X-Force partner Deadpool, Domino has major skills when it comes to hand-to-hand combat and assassination techniques. She has been trained in various armed and unarmed combat techniques, and is well versed in covert operations. She is also described as “a superb athlete and swimmer,” and knows her way around the use of explosives. A true badass, indeed.

Give Zazie Beetz Her Own Domino Marvel Movie, Immediately

One of Deadpool 2’s best meta-jokes involves the capital-P Putting Together A Team portion of the movie.

It’s pretty thorough; there’s a jumpy montage of would-be team members interviewing for the job; the rousing pre-airdrop pep talk; and finally the grisly deaths of just about every character you’re introduced to, since none of them matter much to the franchise anyway.

According to his Marvel Universe Wiki entry, Shatterstar—one of these team members, played briefly by Lewis Tan—“possesses superhuman abilities relating to the absorption of sonic and vibrational energy, as well as an intuitive learning capability, but these claims can not be substantiated at this time.” That is quite the collection of powers to have to explain on-screen, or even say aloud, to another person.

“Basically I can do everything you do, but better,” Shatterstar says in the film, sparing you. Domino—played by Zazie Beetz, whom you may know as Van from Atlanta—can “subliminally and psionically initiate random telekinetic acts that affect probability in her favor.” She also gives you the CliffsNotes. Or Note. What’s her superpower? “I’m lucky.”
