Is Ms Marvel a Mutant? What is this Ms Marvel Mutant about?

Is Ms Marvel a Mutant? What are Ms. Marvel’s mutant powers then? Kamala Khan is a superheroine who appears in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, writer G. Willow Wilson, and artists Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie, Kamala is Marvel’s first Muslim protagonist character and Pakistani personality with her own comic book.

In the Marvel Universe, Kamala is a teenage Pakistani-American from Jersey City, New Jersey with body-morphing abilities who discovers that she has Inhuman genes in the aftermath of the “Inhumanity” storyline. She assumes the mantle of Ms. Marvel from her idol, Carol Danvers, after Danvers becomes Captain Marvel.

Kamala made her first appearance in a background cameo in Captain Marvel #14 (August 2013), before starring in the solo series Ms. Marvel from February 2014 to March 2019, in a second solo series, The Magnificent Ms. Marvel, from October 2019 to May 2021, and in three Ms. Marvel limited series from November 2019 to January 2023.

From 2016 to 2021, the character played a supporting role in the team series Champions and Secret Warriors; Kamala was also the focus of the 2020 event series “Outlawed” after being rendered comatose and made the face of “Kamala’s Law”, a vigilante minimum age law. An alternate future widowed version of the character named Kamala Carrelli, known by the vigilante name Khan, appears as a main character in the team series Exiles, published from April 2018 to March 2019.

Is Ms Marvel a Mutant?

After Ms. Marvel died in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, her death turned out to be shockingly brief, as Marvel revealed recently that it was resurrecting the popular superhero, but not only was she coming back to life, but she would both be joining the X-Men and discovering that she was a mutant!

In this week’s X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1 by Gerry Duggan, with art by Adam Kubert, Luciano Vecchio, Matteo Lolli, Russell Dauterman, Javier Pina, R.B. Silva, Joshua Cassara, Kris Anka & Pepe Larraz, plus color artists Rain Beredo, Ceci De La Cruz, Matthew Wilson, Erick Arciniega & Marte Gracia and lettering by Virtual Calligraphy (Tom Muller w/Jay Bown did the design work for the issue), we discovered the details about Kamala Khan’s resurrection on Krakoa, including whether her classic “embiggening” superpowers were due to her mutant heritage, and also whether she was definitely still an Inhuman, or if that was a mistake, and she was only a mutant all along.

Are Ms. Marvel’s current powers from her mutant heritage?

First off, as soon as Kamala was resurrected, the X-Men calmed her fears down about this new fact that she was a mutant, but also that her family had to deal with her recent demise. Emma Frost noted that she will adjust her family’s memories so that they do not recall that their daughter ever died at all (she was also given an outfit to wear for the Hellfire Gala. It is what we used in the header image for this article).

We then received confirmation that Ms. Marvel’s current superpowers, the ability to increase her size and stretch (basically Mister Fantastic’s power set) comes from her Inhuman side being activated by the Terrigen Mists. Therefore, her superpowers are NOT mutant ones. It also means that she just happens to be both of Inhuman heritage AND mutant heritage.

What are Ms. Marvel’s mutant powers then?

Naturally, if her superpowers are still Inhuman in nature, Kamal wanted to know what her mutant abilities are, but Charles Xavier explained to her that there is no way to know, because she was exposed to the Terrigen Mists before her mutant powers surfaced. That, though, might have been a major blessing for her, as Terrigen Mists have been shown to have very negative effects on mutants. So had Kamala manifested her mutant abilities FIRST, she might have died, or been severely injured by the Terrigen Mists.

As it is, Xavier explains that there is no sure bet that activating her mutant abilities (which were apparently suppressed when her Inhuman abilities manifested themselves) would not cause her physical harm. In addition, the X-Men believe in bodily autonomy, so they would never ask Kamala to try to trigger her mutant abilities without her permission.

So for now, after the devastating attack on the X-Men at the Hellfire Gala, Kamala is working as a member of the X-Men, but using only her Inhuman abilities for now. Time will tell if she ever manifests her mutant powers at ALL, and whether they are similar to the ones she had on her Disney+ TV series.

Ms. Marvel Is Invisible to Orchis Tech (But Can Still Use Her Powers)

After dying to save Mary Jane Watson, Kamala was recently resurrected by the X-Men, who had discovered her unique (and so far unexplained) biology. Kamala’s Inhuman powers were activated years ago by a cloud of Terrigen Mist – the substance which awakens Inhuman genes, but is generally fatal to mutants.

It makes sense that this process suppressed Kamala’s mutant power, even as it left her actual mutant gene intact, allowing the X-Men to bring her back to life. However, just hours after she was brought back, the X-Men were laid low. Orchis framed the mutants for multiple attacks on humanity, killed many of their core members, and teleported 250,000 mutants to parts unknown. Now, the Stark Sentinels – based on Tony Stark’s stolen technology – are hunting them, forcing them to constantly hide deep underground or use power-dampening technology to stay hidden at the cost of being able to draw on their abilities.

The X-Men Desperately Need Ms. Marvel as an Undercover Agent

While fans desperately want to know what Ms. Marvel’s mutant powers are (even as most suspect they’ll be similar to her light-bending MCU abilities), she couldn’t be better suited to help the X-Men in her current state. Orchis’ mutant-detecting tech is incredibly sophisticated, but Kamala’s suppressed X-gene means she’s immune.

However, thanks to her Inhuman powers, she can still stretch and shapeshift, making her the one thing Orchis believe they don’t have to face: a superpowered mutant who’s invisible to technological detection. It’s no surprise that understanding this, Talon and Synch want Kamala to go undercover.

However, as Kamala reflects in this preview, being a mutant also comes with downsides. Homo superior are seen as a threat by humanity in a way that the Inhumans aren’t, and Kamala is now one of their number, joining them at a time when that offers precious little protection and endless responsibilities. It’s likely that the four-issue Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant will ultimately reveal Kamala’s latent mutant power, but hopefully that can wait until the final issue, because right now Ms. Marvel is most useful as an invisible – but still powerful – agent of the X-Men.
